The Western movie is perhaps the purest cultural expression of the United States. And the creation of the Western as a genre, and of John Wayne as its archetypal hero, was the work of director John Ford, pictured here in Monument Valley, whose signature mesas formed the epic backdrop for so many of his films. Ford created more than just movies, he created mythology.
