Scorsese entered the ’90s riding the wave of Goodfellas, which elevated him to the rank of probably greatest living American director. Shown here at age fifty, Scorsese was tackling something new, a period piece based on Edith Wharton’s novel The Age of Innocence. It was a long way from Mean Streets and Raging Bull, which is what piqued Esquire’s interest.
